What are prepositions?

• A preposition is a word used to link nouns, pronouns, or phrases to other words in a sentence.
They act to connect the people, objects, time, and location of a sentence.

There are several types of prepositions. 
Let's take a close look at them.
Some of the prepositions fall under several types.

Prepositions of place: In, on, at. under, behind, between, in front of, below, by, among, against.

Prepositions of movement and direction: To, towards. off, for, into, onto, past. around, from, through, across, along.

Prepositions of time: While, during, from, to, since, for.

Preposition of cause or reason: For, to, with, of.

Preposition of source or price: At, for.

Preposition of agent or instrument method and manner: By, with.

Preposition of possession: With, of, to.

Preposition of origin: From.

Points to remember

Some verbs are always followed by prepositions. 
Examples: Agree with, hope for, cured of, begged for, etc.

Some adjectives are always followed by prepositions. 
Examples: Anxious about, contented with, proud of, sorry for, etc.

Some nouns are always followed by prepositions. 
Examples: Admission into, attention to, demand for, etc.

A few tips
She has been living here since three years. - Wrong
She has been living here for three years. - Right.

I have been sick from Monday. - Wrong.
I have been sick since Monday. - Right.

We ordered for some coffee. - Wrong.
We ordered some coffee. - Right.

Prepositions are not used with the words ‘this. ‘evens. ‘Last, and ‘next,
I have an exam on next Monday. - Wrong.
I have an exam next Monday, - Right.
The preposition ‘by’ means ‘close to’ ‘next to’ or ‘beside’.
